If a loved one passes away expectedly at home, the first this thing to do is contact their doctor. The doctor will attend to verify the death and this must be done before contacting your appointed funeral directors.
The Medical Certificate of Cause of Death will normally be completed when the doctor visits your home, though you may need to visit the surgery to obtain it.
Once you have obtained the certificate, book an appointment at the registrars in the sub-district in which the death occurred.
When the death has been registered, please contact us to make an appointment to start making the necessary arrangements. We will then be able to support you throughout the process.
Please do not hesitate to call us at any time for assistance on 01827 58590.
If your loved one has passed away in hospital expectedly, firstly you will need to make the initial contact with your chosen funeral director. They will then explain the necessary steps to bringing your loved one into their care.
The funeral director will make you aware that for the hospital to release the deceased into their care, the hospital will need to see the Certificate for Burial or Cremation (The Green Certificate). This will mean collecting the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death from the hospital and then making an appointment at the registrars in the sub-district in which the death occurred, where they will issue you with the Green Certificate.
During this time, the funeral director will have ordered the necessary forms from the doctor in order for the funeral to take place (cremation only). Once the funeral director has obtained the ‘Green Certificate’ from you, an appointment will need to be made to bring your loved one into their care.
Please call us on 01827 58590 for all the advice you need.
If your loved one has passed away expectedly in a Nursing Home or Hospice, the care team/nurses will ask you to appoint a funeral director. If you choose us then the staff at the Nursing Home or Hospice will contact one of our funeral directors to bring your loved one into our care.
Once your loved one is in our care, a call will be made to the next of kin to advise that the deceased is in our Chapel of Rest.
You will then need to collect the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death from the GP who was caring for your loved one. Once you have obtained this, you will need to make an appointment at the registrars in the sub-district where the death occurred. They will then issue you with the Certificate for Burial or Cremation (The Green Certificate).
When you have the ‘Green Certificate’ please make an appointment with us to start making all the necessary funeral arrangements.
If you need help or advice on any aspect of the above, please give one of our funeral directors a call on 01827 58590.
There are many reasons why a death will be referred to HM Coroner. The most common reasons will be:
When the HM Coroner is involved with the death of a loved one, the registration procedure is slightly different.
A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death will NOT be issued. The registration of the death will be made directly from the HM Coroner’s office to the registrars. This will only happen once the HM Coroner has deemed cause of death.
The Coroner’s officers will contact you directly throughout the time your loved one is with them and they will notify you and us once your loved one can be brought into our care.
Once the HM Coroner has finished their investigation and the necessary paperwork has been received at the registrars in the sub-district in which the death occurred, you will then be able to register the death to obtain the relevant documents needed to close bank accounts etc.
We will then be able to begin making funeral arrangements for your loved one.
When the coroner decides that an inquest is necessary, they may issue the appropriate interim certificate required for burial or cremation.
Once the coroner has advised you that it is possible to attend the registrar’s office to register the death, this is where you can obtain copies of certificates if required after the inquest is completed.
If there is any aspect of this process you don’t understand, please do not hesitate to talk to one of our funeral directors on 01827 58590.
